For the autumn of 2020 I am running the following courses with TAG:

Media on the Margins

This course will focus upon the intersection between media and marginalization. The course format will be a series of open online collaborative discussions where your voice and experiences are essential! Sessions will address marginalization in different areas of the media: film and television, music, advertising, and the internet. We will finish up by looking at how marginalized groups are using media to support their communities and ways to improve representation in media. For each session there will be some assigned online reading, viewing, and/or listening to prepare for the discussion. There will be prompt questions but students will be encouraged to also bring their own ideas and sources to the sessions. These discussions will be screen recorded, so they can be edited and shared as an open-source documentary. All participants will receive copies of their own footage and the finished edit to use in their own projects.

Media Content Production for Activists

One of the most important ways to spread your message, raise awareness, and gain support for your activism is being able to create and share engaging media content. Unless you went to film school, there’s a lot you may not know about how to make your content look great and grab the attention you want. This course will focus on creating images and video, taking the needs and concerns of activists and protesters in mind. All the applications used in this course are Freeware and/or Open Source.

Meeting time/frequency: Sundays 3pm – 5pm EST meetings from 09/13/2020 – 12/20/2020

Capacity: 15-20
